Of course we are all familiar with the children’s classic television show “Sesame Street.” However, are you aware that there is some extension of that show that the NOGGIN network presents? It’s true! It is called “Play with Me Sesame” and stars Bert, Ernie, Prairie Dawn, and Grover. Yes, other “Sesame Street” characters do appear, but the four mentioned are really the hosts.

This show encourages its preschool audience to get involved. Along with games and activities, segments from the original “Sesame Street” episodes are featured. The same basic goals of “Sesame Street” apply to this spin-off, but they are done in different ways. Just like “Sesame Street,” there are regular segments that are shown in every episode.
Although there is no letter or number of the day, “Play with Me Sesame” covers other topics. Bert has a segment called “Pigeon Patterns” where he creates a pattern with his favorite bird — pigeons. He then recreates part of the pattern and asks the audience to help him complete the pattern. Bert also has another part that he hosts where he uncovers a bowl of his favorite food — oatmeal — to reveal a picture at the bottom of the bowl. He asks the audience to try and guess the picture as he scoops out sections of the oatmeal. Prairie Dawn has a segment that she hosts where she shows artwork drawn by “Play with Me Sesame” viewers. She sings an introductory song and then sings about the pictures, making rhymes. The pictures are all different, but they usually have one thing in common. Prairie Dawn always points this out to make sure that the preschoolers recognize that people’s perceptions of one thing can vary. I really like this segment, and my daughter likes dancing around while Prairie Dawn sings.
“Play with Me Sesame” teaches preschoolers many important concepts. Like you could see with Prairie Dawn’s segment, this show teaches children about similarities and differences. This also applies to Bert’s pigeon pattern game. “Play with Me Sesame” also encourages interactive play and creativity.
You and your preschooler can see “Play with Me Sesame” on NOGGIN network. Check your local listings for channel and times. For more information or for “Play with Me Sesame” activities, please visit NOGGIN.com.

Segments
Play with Me Sesame features many different segments, such as:
- Ernie Says: A game similar to 'Simon Says,' except the title is different. Ernie always manages to annoy Bert in this segment. For example, one time he asked Bert to help him hold an enormous piece of cheese, which he said was an 'important part of the game.' To Bert's anger, he says that 'you can stop playing Ernie Says.' He later points out that he just wants to have a snack, as he gets hungry after playing Ernie Says. Another example is Ernie pretending to fall asleep and wake up. Bert thinks he is sleeping, but he wakes up. Unlike Simon Says, where one cannot do something Simon does not say to do, every phrase in Ernie Says begins with 'Ernie says...'.
- Prairie Dawn's Art Class: A segment where Prairie Dawn showcases drawings made by kids.
- Prairie Dawn's Music Class: Beginning in Season 3, Prairie Dawn would trade her art segment for one oriented around music.
- Kit and Domby's Art Class: A segment aired on Play with Me Sesame UK, where Kit and Domby showcase art that has been sent in.
- Sesame Computer: The gang play games on the computer from their website at Noggin.com, such as 'Oatmeal Art,' 'Pigeon Patterns,' 'Perfect Pair and 'Ducks in a Row'.
- Move and Groove with Grover: The child dances along to a video. Grover often interrupts to point out some things and to tell the child more. Other times, he sings basic songs such as 'Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star' or 'A Very Simple Dance'.
- End Segment: A short and final game of Ernie Says is played. The first statement is usually 'Ernie says, say goodbye...' The special circumstance in which the characters say goodbye ties into the theme. For example, Ernie says to say goodbye while wiping windshield wipers in the car-themed episode.
